Year of Planning

Prepare for your Year of Planning (YOP) journey — an essential step toward launching a NAF academy! YOP is self-paced and flexible, allowing you to customize the process to your school’s specific needs and timeline. Here's what to expect:

Personalized support: Receive guidance from NAF portfolio managers and support staff to align your academy’s goals with the NAF design before launch.
YOP Guide: Use this comprehensive online resource to shape your academy’s vision, access activities and tools, and work through guiding questions. The guide streamlines the planning process and supports the timely completion of your Academy Design Plan.


Team Building & Leadership Build the Academy Design Team (ADT) with a shared vision to establish a career academy. The multi-disciplinary team will combine their expertise and perspective to collaboratively develop an academy design plan.
Academy Quality Schedule the YOP kick-off and complete Snapshot 1 to establish an Action Plan. The ADT will monitor academy design plan progress and ensure regular updates to the Action Plan.
Program of Study Develop a career-themed Program of Study with optional advanced academics and early college options.
Student Recruitment & Enrollment Develop an open choice student recruitment plan.
Advisory Board Develop an employer engagement plan that includes advisory board recruitment materials.
Work-Based Learning Develop a Work-Based Learning plan for all academy grades with advisory board participation.
Authentic Projects Develop a career connected authentic project-based learning plan per grade level.
College & Career Readiness Develop a college and career readiness plan.
Graduation Schedule a graduation readiness meeting with your portfolio manager to review academy design plan progress. Upload all required documentation supporting the completion of the plan in ASH at least two weeks before graduation.
